“Truly a musician
at heart!” Rey Aguilar, born
and raised in the Philippines and coming to the United States in 1975, has
always had a passionate love for music and playing his guitar. Very
versatile, he enjoyed playing all types of music and upon joining Dances
of the Pacific in 1977, a polynesian group home based in Walnut Creek, he
developed a very strong interest in polynesian music, language, drumming
and dance. Throughout his years with Dances of the Pacific and then
eventually with Drums of Polynesia - a group started by his wife and good
friend Rick Smith in 1993, he constantly strived to improve the quality of
singing and drumming, which led to his contributing greatly to the
numerous annual shows, awarding-winning competitions entered by the group,
and travels that have included touring in England, Spain and the Pacific.
Now as co-director of Te Mana O Te Ra, both he and his wife hope to
educate as many people, young and old - about the wonderful art of music
and dance and the love one develops for the Polynesian islands.
